The new flagship Nikon Z9 is here, and TCSTV got to do a hands-on preview with guest reviewer Rob Galbraith! Packed full with a ton of new features, a 45.7-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, ultra-high-resolution images, unparalleled AF performance and more, the Nikon Z9 truly impressed Dave and Evelyn!
To see the full potential of the Nikon Z9, Dave and Evelyn tested the Z9 for a week in a variety of challenging situations. Off the bat, Dave and Evelyn noticed that the Z9 had a more substantial weight compared to other mirrorless cameras while still being very well balanced. It has the same weather sealing as the Nikon D6, which is great for a variety of shooting conditions. The two memory card slots take both CFexpress Type B and XQD, and a battery has a sleeper rating of about 740, though Dave and Evelyn got a lot more than that!
The overall design of the Z9 is very durable and familiar with Nikon’s classic ergonomic experience and a lot of custom controls. It has a 4-way tiltable screen that can shoot both horizontal and vertical, giving the user a lot of different viewing angles. Although reviews surrounding the 3.69 million-dot electronic viewfinder have been less than stellar, the TCSTV team found it quite good and bright. The viewfinder also has dual-stream technology, so it can be sending information as you are shooting, a truly blackout-free shooting experience.
Both Dave and Evelyn found the 45.7-megapixel backside-illuminated stack sensor to be rather impressive. This sensor can shoot landscapes, high-detail images and high iso performance to give us outstanding quality with no noise. Another impressive feature of the Nikon Z9 is that it is the first camera to have no shutter, which is thanks to the incredibly fast sensor readout speed! This is especially helpful for rolling shutter and banding, which Dave and Evelyn tested thoroughly and found that Nikon did an excellent job. Nikon also included a shutter shield so there are no worries of leaving your sensor exposed when changing lenses. As for autofocus, Nikon Z9 is standing out. Thanks to Nikon’s 3D Tracking you have almost 100% coverage of the entire viewfinder!
Now to really put the AF to the test, along with the other amazing features of the Nikon Z9, Dave and Evelyn went to photograph swimming! As a bonus, Dave joined Rob Galbraith at the Padel Tennis Match to get some fun photos while also getting Rob’s thoughts on the new Nikon Z9!
