Two New Fujinon Lenses From Fujifilm

Fujifilm has unveiled two exciting additions to its lens lineup: the  FUJINON XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR II and the FUJINON XF 500mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR. The former is an upgraded version of the popular XF 16-55mm zoom lens, ideal for everyday use, while the latter is the longest super-telephoto prime lens in the Fujifilm X Series, perfect for capturing intricate details of distant subjects. Whether you're in need of a versatile workhorse or a specialized lens for challenging outdoor photography, these new offerings are excellent enhancements to your camera gear.

Introducing the latest marvel from Fujifilm, the FUJINON XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR II, an evolution of the cherished XF 16-55mm zoom lens. Fujifilm has meticulously refined and enhanced everything that made the original lens so beloved, integrating new lens optics, a silky-smooth aperture control, and an improved autofocus system. Boasting a bright F2.8 aperture throughout its entire zoom range, from a wide-angle 16mm (equivalent to a 35mm focal length of 24mm) to a mid-telephoto 55mm (equivalent to a 35mm focal length of 84mm), the XF 16-55mm II caters to a diverse array of still photography genres. Whether capturing the grandeur of nature, the serenity of landscapes, or the intimacy of portraits, this lens leverages its high resolution and stunning, smooth bokeh to deliver exceptional results. The lens’s minimum focusing distance of 30cm (11.81 inches) across the entire zoom range allows for impressive close-up photography with a maximum magnification of 0.21x.

The construction of the XF 16-55mm II features an intricate 11-group, 16-element configuration, incorporating 4 aspherical lenses, 1 Super Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lens, and 3 ED lenses. This sophisticated design ensures image clarity and sharpness from the centre to the edges, effectively controlling chromatic aberrations. By utilizing cutting-edge lens processing technologies, Fujifilm has managed to make the lens elements thinner, resulting in a reduction of the overall lens length by approximately 11mm (0.433 inches) and a volumetric reduction of around 37.8% compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the XF 16-55mm II is dust-resistant, weather-resistant, and capable of withstanding low temperatures, thanks to 12 sealing points throughout the lens body and a fluorine coating on the front element that provides superior resistance to water and smudges.

Photographers will appreciate the new "Aperture De-Click Switch," which allows for effortless toggling between stepped aperture control for still photography and smooth, continuous aperture control for video recording, ensuring seamless and intuitive operation. The advanced design also minimizes focus breathing, maintaining consistent framing during focusing. The integration of an inner focusing system, lightweight focusing lens elements, and a high-speed linear motor enables rapid and precise autofocus, achieving speeds as fast as 0.02 seconds.

Now it's time to introduce the new FUJINON XF 500mm F5.6 R LM OIS WR, a groundbreaking super-telephoto lens crafted for rapid autofocus response and delivering unparalleled detail, making it the ultimate choice for birding, wildlife photography, and capturing sports action. With a striking 500mm focal length (equivalent to 762mm in 35mm format), a maximum aperture of F5.6, and an extended focal length of 700mm (equivalent to 1067mm in 35mm format), photographers can capture incredibly distant subjects with remarkable clarity.

Delving into the sophisticated construction of the XF 500mm F5.6, it features 21 elements organized into 14 groups, which include two Super Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses and five ED lenses. This meticulous design significantly reduces chromatic aberration, a common issue in super-telephoto lenses, resulting in exceptional resolving power that reveals extraordinary details far beyond what the naked eye can perceive. Furthermore, the lens boasts dust and weather resistance, with 20 sealing points along the barrel, and it remains operational in temperatures as frigid as -10°C. The front element is treated with a fluorine coating, endowing it with hydrophobic and anti-stain properties, ensuring the lens remains a dependable companion for extended shooting sessions in adverse weather conditions.

Despite offering a focal length equivalent to 762mm (in 35mm format) at a maximum aperture of F5.6, the XF 500mm F5.6 maintains a compact and lightweight design, tipping the scales at approximately 1,335g (2.94 lbs). The optimal arrangement of lens elements ensures balanced weight distribution, providing a comfortable and stable grip. Enhanced sensing accuracy and an optimized mechanical design enable an impressive 5.5-stops of optical image stabilization, making it effortless to handhold or carry the lens throughout a day in the field.

For precise, swift, and silent autofocus performance even at super-telephoto ranges, the XF 500mm F5.6 incorporates an inner focus system paired with a high-speed linear motor, achieving focus speeds as quick as 0.33 seconds. To further ease the workload, the Focus Preset function allows photographers to shift focus to a pre-defined location instantly with the press of the Focus Preset button. Additionally, the lens features a Focus Limiter, enabling users to restrict the autofocus range. This feature can significantly shorten autofocus time when capturing subjects approximately 16 feet (five meters) away or farther. The Focus Control button, conveniently positioned at the front edge of the lens barrel, allows users to swiftly recall a function assigned via the Focus Selector, ensuring seamless autofocus operation.
