Sony has a reputation for making some of the best lenses on the market. Beautifully designed to match Sony’s innovative camera technology, their lenses reliably produce stunningly sharp, clear images. They are a favourite amongst us here at TCS, not only because they are thoughtfully constructed to make the most of Sony’s incredible autofocus system, but also because they are lightweight and user friendly! At the top of the list, here are The Camera Store’s five favourite Sony lenses!
Sony FE 200–600mm F5.6–6.3 G OSS
Designed for outdoor sports photography and wildlife photography the 200–600mm F5.6–6.3 G is a native full-frame mirrorless super-telephoto zoom lens ready for action! With five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one aspherical element, it has superb resolution and image quality, while suppressing spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration, which can be problematic at super-telephoto focal lengths. The 200–600mm F5.6–6.3 has a DDSSM (Direct Drive SuperSonic Motor) system, giving it the power and precision for remarkably fast, accurate focusing. With full internal zoom, you can easily and quickly transition from 200mm to 400mm, to help you keep up with all the action. Whether it’s a fast-paced soccer game or snapping the perfect bird photo, the 11-blade circular aperture mechanism makes it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce striking images with deep, creamy G lens bokeh. Designed for portrait photography, performance photography, and fashion photography, the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM creates razor-sharp images. Between the XA (extreme aspherical), Super ED (extra-low dispersion) and ED glass elements, in addition to an 11-blade circular aperture, the 135mm F1.8 corrects aberration while producing the smooth, elegant G Master bokeh that everyone loves. It also has XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors which are responsible for one of the best features of the 135mm F1.8. The XD motors work to maintain focus on moving subjects with impressive speed, precision, and reliability, while also providing AF control, making it perfect for performance and fashion photography. It is also great for portraits as it has a floating focus system that makes it possible to achieve a minimum focus distance of just 0.7 m (2.3 ft) and a maximum magnification of 0.25x. Designed for astrophotography, environmental portrait photography, landscape photography, and architectural photography, the FE 20mm F1.8 G has a lot of creative play. This ultra-wide 20mm lens has two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, two XD (eXtreme Dynamic) Linear Motors and a 9-blade circular aperture that come together to create high-speed, outstanding corner-to-corner resolution images with smooth, creamy bokeh and natural-looking highlights. The 20mm F1.8 has been thoughtfully constructed to be only 373g with intuitive ergonomics. This small size and lightweight not only enhance the lens’s overall mobility but make it a well-balanced system that is ideal for use on gimbals or accessory grips. Being a 20mm focal length, the FE 20mm F1.8 also makes for an excellent selfie camera! With a minimum focusing distance of just 0.19 m (0.63 ft) when used in AF mode, and an even closer 0.18 m (0.59 ft) minimum focusing distance when focused manually, while also being incredibly fast and quiet, this lens is ready to venture alongside you! Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 G Master OSS
Designed for sports photography, portrait photography and to be an overall professional workhorse, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM is one noble steed. This incomparable F2.8 telephoto zoom has an XA (extreme aspherical) element, four ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and two Super ED glass elements which contributes to what was a previously unachievable resolution. It also suppresses chromatic aberration for maximum resolution and natural colour at all focal lengths without bleeding. With class-leading close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 0.96 m and 0.25x maximum magnification, exceptional autofocusing even at a high frame rate and extraordinary image stabilization, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 is ideal for portraits, telephoto macro, and more! From chasing memories to chasing projects, this lens will keep working until the day is done!
Designed for landscape photography, astrophotography, sports photography, and architectural photography, the Sony 12-24mm F2.8 is the world’s widest full-frame zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture! This unique lens has a bright F2.8 maximum aperture from 12mm to 24mm, making it a very versatile lens. With three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, one of which is the largest XA element in any Alpha lens, it has exceptionally stunning resolution throughout the image area. Additionally, the 12-24mm F2.8 has two Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED glass elements to suppress chromatic aberration and a new Nano AR Coating II minimizes flare and ghosting for clear, crisp imagery. The constant F2.8 zoom delivers stunning image quality and is ideal for shooting night scenes, starry skies, and other low-light subjects. Its compact size provides extra mobility for active sports photographers while still giving them the ability to shoot wide angles. Overall it’s a well-corrected lens with minimal distortion and curvature with fast, precise autofocus and tracking. (Watch our Sony 12-24mm Review on Youtube.)
