Sony has unveiled the beta version of Camera Verify, a tool that allows image authenticity information to be shared externally through a unique URL. This new Camera Authenticity Solution has been created to assist news organizations in addressing the growing issue of verifying digital images in the era of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
As AI-generated and altered content becomes more prevalent and increasingly sophisticated, media professionals face a rising demand for trusted, verifiable imagery. Sony’s Camera Authenticity Solution is crafted to meet this demand by embedding C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) digital signatures and Sony’s specialized 3D depth data directly into the image at the moment it’s captured.
This tool integrates C2PA digital signatures and Sony’s unique 3D depth information directly within the camera during image capture. This allows the authenticity details of the image to be verified via the Image Validation Site. The new 'Camera Verify' Beta lets news organizations generate sharing URLs for images with embedded signatures, enabling third parties to view the verification results via these trusted URLs issued directly by the site. Additionally, organizations can select specific pieces of authenticity data to share during content publication and distribution, making it quicker to circulate reliable, authenticated material.
Moreover, the Digital Signature Upgrade License, which makes it possible to embed digital signatures directly into images taken with compatible Sony cameras, is now available for purchase on the Camera Authenticity Solution website, providing wider access to this tool for more professionals. Compatible camera models for this digital signature license are Alpha 1 II (Ver.2.00 or later), Alpha 1 (Ver.3.00 or later), Alpha 9 III (Ver.3.00 or later), Alpha 7S III (Ver.4.00 or later), and Alpha 7 IV (Ver.5.00 or later) (as of June 26, 2025).
Sony intends to extend this technology to video content by late 2025 as part of its commitment to fostering trust in digital media. Alongside its involvement in the C2PA steering committee, Sony aims to continue contributing to enhancing the reliability of media content.
