About On the Road with Mike Drew, by Mike Drew

Capturing the natural splendour of Alberta’s foothills and grasslands, On the Road with Mike Drew showcases some of Drew’s finest work from the past two decades. As a seasoned photojournalist, his travels take him away from the hustle and bustle of city life to the expansive Alberta skies where the sparsely treed foothills and vast prairie vistas dominate the landscape. Whether navigating lonesome highways, hiking along rugged coulees, trudging through aromatic sagebrush, or fly-fishing in sparkling streams, Drew meticulously documents this sprawling landscape and seamlessly integrates himself into its unique and diverse environments. The resulting stories and images are invariably imbued with Mike's signature sense of joy, wonder, and excitement. Drew’s adventures span a wide array of regions along the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, including the upper Oldman River valley, Waterton, Kananaskis, the Porcupine Hills, the wild-horse country west of Sundre, and further up through the Ya-Ha-Tinda. He also explores more prairie-centric locales such as Dry Island Buffalo Jump, Dinosaur Provincial Park, the Red Deer River valley, Milk River Ridge, the Pinhorn grazing reserve, the Cypress Hills, and the windswept grasslands stretching between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

About Along the Western Front, by Leah Hennel

Along the Western Front offers a fresh and insightful perspective on the iconic cowboy way of life, introducing photography enthusiasts to one of photojournalism’s most evocative shooters. This stunning debut collection of photography focuses on contemporary cowboy culture and the modern ranching lifestyle throughout central and southern Alberta. Growing up in the city, Leah Hennel spent her summers with her cousins on a farm near Stettler, Alberta, located roughly halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. From an early age, the ranching and farming lifestyle both intrigued and fascinated her, although she quickly realized that it was not an easy life to lead. It's always been demanding work, but its appeal lies in the general simplicity of the lifestyle and the constant exposure to the beauty of the natural landscape. Most people, however, rarely catch a glimpse of this way of life. They obtain their daily sustenance from supermarkets and seldom consider where these essentials originate or how they are produced. Yet, whether city dwellers realize it or not, ranching and farming remain vitally important. Hennel specializes in and is deeply passionate about documenting rural life. Through her consistently remarkable, vibrant, and at times intensely personal photographs, she is able to both celebrate this essential pursuit and, in doing so, perhaps educate those who are less familiar with it.
