Experience an unforgettable evening with acclaimed local photographers Leah Hennel and Mike Drew as they recount the adventures and challenges encountered during their photographic expeditions across the prairies.
Drawing from their acclaimed books, On the Road with Mike Drew by Mike Drew and Along the Western Front by Leah Hennel, they will unveil the captivating stories behind their favourite images.
The presentation will engage you in a lively discussion about capturing the essence of the region's people and landscapes. Following the presentation will be an interactive Q&A session and a book signing, offering you the chance to personally connect with these talented artists!
About Mike Drew:
Mike Drew’s column is featured in print in the Calgary Sun since 1991 and has been enjoyed and shared by hundreds of thousands of readers. His column is also featured online with narrated video content. He also has a wonderful book called On The Road with Mike Drew that features a collection of his work from the series. Mike also earned first place for his Use of Video for his series Mike Drew On The Road under the Regional Brands category for the 2022 Global Media Awards.
About Leah Hennel:
Leah Hennel is an award-winning photojournalist. Always in search of stunning visuals, the Calgarian has travelled the globe — yet she's managed to uncover some of her most arresting shots in her backyard. In particular, Leah's work documenting rural life is captivating.
A graduate of the SAIT photojournalism program, she worked five years at the Calgary Sun and 18 years at the Calgary Herald. Leah covered two Paralympic Games, Sochi 2014 and Rio de Janeiro 2016. Additionally for Postmedia, she worked the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Leah also shot the action at Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 for the Canadian Olympic Committee.
In 2019, she took a staff-photographer position at Alberta Health Services, a role that includes documenting the front lines of COVID-19. She also owns a successful freelance career. Her work appears around the world in publications such as the Globe and Mail, The Guardian, Maclean's magazine, The Narwhal and the CBC. Too, Leah has published two photography books — Along The Western Front and Alone Together: A Pandemic Photo Essay.
Leah is a three-time winner at the National Newspaper Awards. She also earned first place for Feature Photo at the National Press Photographers Association's yearly awards and third place twice in Pictures of the Year International. Leah has also claimed the Sports Media Canada’s Outstanding Photography award. As well, she's a four-time finalist for Photojournalist of the Year for the News Photographers of Canada.
Based in Calgary, she lives with her husband Scott and son Hunter.
