Designed to be portable, powerful, and fun, Tamron focused intently on designing a telephoto zoom lens that made a 300mm telephoto focal length more accessible. To make this work, Tamron made the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 only 148mm (5.8 in) in length with a maximum diameter of 77mm and a weight of just 545g (19.2 oz). The compactness of this lens gives users more freedom to use a telephoto in all kinds of situations! It also makes it a perfect size for the Sony A7C, which too was designed to be lightweight, small and ready for any adventure!
With Tamron’s highest priority being small size and weight, they opted to make the 70-300mm with an aperture of F6.3 for the telephoto end. This aperture makes it so that they can achieve a slim lens barrel with outstanding lightness. Getting into the components of the lens, the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 has 15 elements in 10 groups with an appropriate arrangement of LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements. For stunning autofocus, the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 has an RXD motor unit to help you stay focused on the action. The RXD uses an actuator to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor, allowing it to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. It also has a sensor that precisely detects the position of the lens, enabling high-speed and accurate AF. Pairing this with the state-of-the-art AF of the Sony A7C, you would get one fast and powerful combo!
Making sure the image quality is to a high standard, Tamron has worked to eliminate aberrations such as axial chromatic aberration, which tends to occur in telephoto lenses. To suppress ghosting and flare the lens uses Tamron’s BBAR (Broad-Brand Anti-Reflection) Coating, which is renowned for its anti-reflection performance. The 300mm end, which receives particularly frequent use in a telephoto zoom, provides excellent high-resolution performance from the center of the image all the way to the corners. Additionally, the 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 produces stunning bokeh, making subjects pop against the beautifully soft bokeh effects in the background.
