Two Canadians Win Awards at Wildlife Photographer of Year Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Shane Gross won the Adult Grand Title in the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards by the U.K.'s Natural History Museum, and John E. Marriott won the "Animal Portraits" category. We are so proud of these two incredible, Canadian photographers!

Shane Gross's photo of a swarm of western toad tadpoles swimming in the waters of Vancouver Island called The Swarm of Life, was the image that won him his grand title. The photo also won the "Wetlands" category.

After entering the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition every year since 2011, this was Shane's first time winning even a category. Shane's winning photo shows hundreds of western toad tadpoles, a species that has been threatened by development and disease, swimming together in their daily afternoon migration to areas with more algae to eat.

John E. Marriott's photo of a family of lynx in the Yukon called On Watch, was the image that won in the "Animal Portraits" category.

To get the photo, John had tracked the lynx for nearly a week by snowshoe, making sure to keep his distance so as not to spook them. It also highlights the threat to wildlife, noting climate change has reduced the prey available to lynx.

Together, we are so proud of these two Canadian photographers in their achievements. Congratulations Shane and John!
