Canon has announced one of our favourite things, a firmware update! But it’s not just one, but three new firmware updates for the EOS R5, EOS R3, and EOS 1D X Mark III. The EOS R5 and EOS R3 both have some key new features to take a look at.
EOS R5: Firmware Version 1.8.1.
- Firmware Version 1.8.1 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

Adds
to the camera menu. By utilizing the in-body IS mechanism, it is now possible to record images with higher resolution.* • *Use EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional to check the images. EOS Utility/Digital Photo Professional will need to be upgraded.
- Adds
to the camera menu. - Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.
- Adds the ability for images to be cropped and resized during transfer to the FTP server.
- Adds Protect Images During
to the camera menu. Images transferred via FTP can now be automatically protected. The user can determine if images have already been transferred via FTP. - Fixes minor issues.
Firmware Version 1.8.1 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.7.0. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.8.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
An additional new feature of the EOS R5 is IBIS High-Resolution Shot.
IBIS High-Resolution Shooting function uses the IBIS (In Body Image Stabilizer) mechanism to generate a high-resolution (Approx. 402.7 MP) composite JPEG image from nine images while shifting the image sensor.

EOS R3: Firmware Version 1.4.0.
Firmware Version 1.4.0 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

Adds support for Speedlite EL-5.*
• *The automatic light intensity adjustment of the AF-assist beam is not supported. - Adds
to the camera menu. -
Pre-registered people can now be detected and tracked with priority. **
• ** This feature may not operate if faces are too small to detect, in profile or turned at an angle or partially hidden; for scenes where the subject is moving; or due to certain shooting environments. - Adds
to the camera menu. - Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.
- Adds
to the camera menu. When a compatible lens is used for panning shots, image stabilization and subject blur correction are applied during the exposure. - Improves the Auto White Balance (AWB) setting to reduce the time it takes for the AWB result to be reflected in the camera’s viewfinder’s display when looking through the viewfinder.
- Adds Protect Images During
to the camera menu. Images transferred via FTP can now be automatically protected. The user can determine if images have already been transferred via FTP. - Fixes minor issues.
Firmware Version 1.4.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.3.0. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.4.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Additional new features of the EOS R3 are Register People Priority and Panning Assist.

EOS 1D X Mark III: Firmware Version 1.7.7.
Firmware Version 1.7.1 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
- Adds
to the camera menu. - Network settings can now be transferred between cameras of the same model.
- Adds the ability for images to be cropped and resized during transfer to the FTP server.
- Fixes an issue, in which the power of some camera units that meet specific conditions cannot be turned on immediately after having updated the firmware to Firmware Version 1.7.0.
- Fixes minor issues.
- *1,2 and 4 are the changes in Version 1.7.0, and 3 is the addition in Version 1.7.1.
- If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.7.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
