The Camera Store TV, better known as TCSTV, is one of our favourite ways to share our love of camera gear and connect with our incredible photo community, and we love how much you all love our videos. Over the years, we have made hundreds of videos, and one of our top questions has always been, what gear do we use to make our videos? Well, we are finally giving you an answer! In our latest TCSTV video, Dave and Drew dive into the top 5 items we use to create our beloved TCSTV content!
Of course, our TCSTV kit has gone through many variations as newer and better gear rolls through. The main point of TCSTV is for us to test out new gear in our videos to give you an honest review. But we've also experimented and demoed all kinds of gear to build our go-to kit so we can create consistent, highest-quality content, and we are pleased to share our top 5 items in our current TCSTV kit!
1. Our Camera - Sony FX3 Mirrorless Body
Our camera, the heart of our kit, the magic maker, is the Sony FX3. This camera is exceptionally versatile, with numerous codecs available, and is incredible in low light. The Dual Native ISO makes it easy to get super clean footage even when shooting in overcast situations or at night when really pushing the ISO. Our team mostly shoots 422 10bit 4K 60 for b-roll, intermixed with a little bit of 4K 120 for flexibility and slo-mo, while our primary a-roll is shot in 422 10bit 24. This is then matched with our b-cam (currently the Sony a7 IV, sometimes the Panasonic GH7), with whichever lens our team is reviewing or one that catches Dave's attention. Attached to the Sony FX3 you'll also see Drew using the SmallRig 4148 Rotatable Horizontal-to-Vertical Mount Plate Kit for Sony to get all the different shots!
2. Our Lens - Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II
Our primary shooting lens is the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM II, which is the perfect lens for the type of content our team creates. The range is exactly what Drew needs, and he loves the 24 focal length. There are times when shooting scenic shots that a slightly wider lens may be better, but overall, this lens is the ideal package for our shoots.
3. Our Stabilization - Manfrotto 190XPRO3 Tripod
Our team has experimented with many different types of stabilization, and what they use does change depending on the shoot, but they keep coming back to the Manfrotto 190XPRO3 Tripod as the go-to for solid stabilization. For years, this tripod has been a rock-solid warrior through all the different shoots and locations and has never been a worry, so when Drew isn't using the DJI RS 4 PRO for run and gun shots, you'll see him locked down sturdy with his Manfrotto tripod!
4. Our Audio - Rode Wireless PRO
Great quality audio is crucial! You're not just watching our TCSTV reviews, but listening to them, so we use the Rode Wireless PRO. They give us excellent quality, great range and a lot of flexibility when it comes to recording different videos. They also have 32-bit float technology, which allows Drew to record a backup track when in more challenging audio scenarios that he can use in post.
5. Dave's Guilty Pleasure - Ororo Wear
As you all know, we are located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, so we are no strangers to cold weather, but that doesn't mean Dave and Evelyn want to look like the Michelin Man when filming in the colder months. Ororo wear to the rescue! This excellent quality heated outdoor wear brand allows Dave and Evelyn to adjust the warmth of their jackets, vests, gloves, etc. to their needs without being restricted by big, bulky winter gear. Not only are their products trendy, but they're comfortable and have a long battery life. Dave's particular coat has a USBC battery so he can plug in his phone to charge during long shoots - talk about practical! When you look good and feel good, that makes a shoot a whole lot more fun!
