Encased in a compact, lightweight, and well-balanced design, this lens is perfect for both photography and videography enthusiasts. Whether you're capturing portraits, sporting events, weddings, or creating video content, the 28-70mm F2 G Master is a revolutionary and adaptable lens designed to take the place of multiple prime lenses in one exquisite piece of equipment.
The Sony 28-70mm F2 G Master is equipped with three XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three aspherical elements, resulting in exceptional sharpness from edge to edge throughout the entire zoom range, even when shooting at the maximum aperture of F2. This design minimizes optical imperfections. The lens features a floating focusing system, maintaining internal stability while allowing for an impressive minimum focusing distance of up to 14.8 inches (0.38m) across the entire zoom range. Boasting the G Master lens heritage and a newly designed 11-blade circular aperture unit, the lens produces extraordinary background blur, ideal for images that emphasize a shallow depth of field. Chromatic aberrations and colour fringing are significantly reduced thanks to three Super ED (extra-low dispersion) elements and one ED element integrated into the lens. Additionally, Sony’s Nano AR Coating II minimizes flare and internal reflections, ensuring clear images even when strong light sources are present in the frame.
Catering to the needs of professionals, the 28-70mm F2 G Master stands as one of the most advanced mirrorless camera lenses ever produced, featuring a total of 20 different lens elements arranged within 14 internal groups. Despite its sophisticated optical design, the lens remains compact at dimensions of 92.9 x 139.8mm (3.6 x 5.5 inches) and lightweight at approximately 918g (32.3 ounces). The lens also delivers reliable and responsive autofocus through its four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, providing accurate and swift focus tracking, essential in dynamic scenarios like weddings and sports.
The 28-70mm F2 G Master is not only versatile for photographers but also for videographers. Its aperture and zoom range can handle standard field-of-view shots and tighter compositions up to 70mm. This lens minimizes focus breathing thanks to its construction and compatibility with the Breathing Compensation feature on various Alpha bodies. Its high autofocus performance guarantees reliable focus even when recording at high frame rates, such as 4K 120p or FHD 240p. Moreover, the XD linear motors and the newly developed aperture unit operate quietly, preventing any lens noise from being captured during filming. The lens is also ideal for use with gimbals, with a minimal zoom extension of about 17mm (0.68 inches). The compact design and short external zoom help maintain gimbal balance at various focal lengths.
Regarding the key control features of the 28-70mm F2 G Master, users will appreciate its Linear Response MF for intuitive manual focusing, adjustable zoom ring torque, and an aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch. The lens also offers two customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch, and an AF/MF switch, along with an 86mm filter diameter and a convenient window on the lens hood for variable filter adjustments. All buttons and switches are sealed with silicone gaskets, and critical areas are designed to resist dust and moisture, ensuring dependability even in tough outdoor conditions.
