Sony is lighting the way toward a future of cinematic creation with the new Sony FX5! As the latest addition to Sony's Cinema Line series, this full-frame camera features a newly developed fully stacked CMOS image sensor, 15+ stops of dynamic range, three base ISO settings, and a Dual Gain shooting mode. Plus, for the very first time in the Sony Cinema Line FX series, the FX5 supports Open Gate shooting and in-camera recording in X-OCN, Sony's proprietary RAW format! With 5K at up to 60 fps, 4K at up to 120 fps, and FHD at up to 240 fps, a detachable OLED viewfinder and an XLR handle unit, and a compact and portable body, the new Sony FX5 is a production-ready camera, ready to give cinematographers and video creators even more creative freedom!
At the heart of the new Sony FX5 is a full-frame, fully-stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor and the latest BIONZ XR2™ high-speed image processing engine with a dedicated AI processing unit. This combination raises sensitivity performance with 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3. For effective noise control in any environment, the FX5 offers three base ISOs of ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800. The Dual Gain Shooting function, a first for the FX series, draws more from the sensor for smoother gradation and wider latitude while reducing noise and preserving shadow detail. Another first for the FX series, the FX5 supports 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor, or Open Gate shooting, plus 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm scan modes. Users can capture high-quality recordings in X-OCN, Sony's proprietary 16-bit scene-linear RAW format, without an external recorder. Alongside X-OCN LT, the new X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2 codecs cut data size to speed transfer and streamline post-production.
The FX5 offers built-in AI processing, with AI-based human pose estimation that recognizes a subject's eyes, head, and body, as well as animal and bird eyes with Real-time Eye AF. Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 points to ensure accurate focus and tracking that keeps up with quick-moving subjects, even in dark scenes and when shooting with a shallow depth of field. The Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW) combines visible-light and IR (infrared) sensor data with deep-learning light-source estimation to read scenes accurately, giving more stable and natural white balance in shade, indoors, and other conditions. Furthermore, noise suppression settings (on/off) offer flexibility to match shooting intent and post-production workflows, while the de-squeeze function supports anamorphic lenses at 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x.
Operation is a breeze with the FX5 thanks to its 5-axis optical in-body image stabilization, which anchors the image, and the latest stabilization unit that roughly doubles the roll correction range of the previous system to suppress rotational blur. Active Mode and the new Dynamic Active Mode keep handheld footage steady, while its compact, lightweight body makes it easy to carry. The FX5 offers a .5-type, approximately 2.76-million-dot 16:9 touch-panel LCD monitor, larger than the FX3's, which mounts on a 4-axis multi-angle arm, tilting ~98 degrees up, 40 degrees down, and opening ~180 degrees to the side, with a high-brightness adjustable panel. The shooting information sits around the edges of the screen so it never overlaps the image. The "BIG6" home screen, carried over from CineAlta cameras, gathers key settings such as frame rate, exposure, and LUTs so creators can focus on the shot. Additionally, a new menu system gives operability consistent with CineAlta cameras and the FX6 on a shared production.
To maintain reliability, a high-efficiency cooling fan and optimized heat dissipation are used to keep the FX5 stable through long recording sessions. The lightweight, rigid body carries screw holes in multiple locations to attach accessories directly, so users can build rigs without a cage, while the wired LAN terminal enables remote operation and a stable network connection, with the expandability professional production networks require. The recently released high-capacity NP-SA100 battery (2670 mAh) holds approximately 1.3 times the capacity of the Z-series NP-FZ100 for longer shooting, which is paired with two USB Type-C™ ports that accept timecode input through an optional timecode adapter cable and external power through USB Power Delivery (PD), for stable long-duration shooting.
Optional accessories for the Sony FX5 include the DVF-EL1, a detachable viewfinder that carries a 0.58-type, approximately 7.07-million-dot OLED panel. It supports HDR display with a DCI-P3-equivalent colour gamut and 10-bit gradation, which confirms subject colours accurately and reveals fine detail when shooting and playing back high-contrast scenes. It offers approximately 0.9x magnification and a tilt mechanism that moves from 0 to approximately 90 degrees upward for comfortable monitoring at low, high, and handheld angles. The other accessory is the XLR Handle Unit. The XLR-H2 carries two XLR/TRS combo terminals and supports up to 4-channel audio input. The Dual AD converters digitize microphone signals with high precision across a wide dynamic range and record in-camera at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float. The XLR-H2 connects directly to the body through the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe for stable digital transmission.
