When it comes to astrophotography, the new OM System OM-3 Astro is packed with features to ensure that your photos of the night sky are nothing short of spectacular. At the heart of this camera is a TruePic X image processor, paired with a high-sensitivity, back-illuminated Live MOS sensor, which delivers stunning detail and clarity even in low-light conditions. The camera also has an infrared cut filter that’s specifically tuned to allow nearly 100% transmission of Hα wavelengths. This means those challenging-to-capture red nebulae are rendered in vivid, jaw-dropping detail, something standard cameras just can’t achieve.
To make shooting out in the field easier than ever, the OM-3 Astro comes with three preset custom modes:
- C1: Perfect for traditional astrophotography, like deep-sky imaging of nebulae.
- C2: Designed for capturing starry landscapes with sharp foregrounds and skies full of stars.

Another game-changing feature is the Handheld High Res Shot Mode. Leveraging ultra-high-density pixel information, the OM-3 Astro can create one stunning 50MP high-resolution image by combining 12 shots. Since the position of each image is matched when compositing, when High Res Shot Mode is used on a tripod, the camera will produce composite images where the diurnal motion of the stars is corrected, and when using an equatorial mount, it will produce composite images where the star misalignment caused by tracking errors is corrected. In addition to this method's excellent detail, shooting this way also reduces image noise.
