If any of you have paid attention to Sony’s new generation of camera releases, you’ll know that they aren’t opposed to reusing and recycling already successful technology and shaping it to fit the needs of their customers. That’s no different than the new Sony ZV-E1. Here are some reasons why it's the same, but different.
Image quality
The Sony ZVE1 has similar technology to some of Sony’s most successful cameras, the Sony FX6, Sony A7Siii, Sony FR7 and even the FX3 which was noted to be the camera that was shot in Greig Frasers ‘The Creator’. The ZVE1 can shoot in 24,60 and 120 frames a second in 4K ( with a slight crop on the 120 fps), and it carries over the same 10-bit 4:2:2 image with the same dynamic range using S-log3, meaning that users not only have amazing images, but also, it can match with other cameras if needed.
Okay, well, what’s different?
Well, the devil is in the details. The sensor, albeit amazing, doesn’t tell the whole story. Here are a few unique features. Auto Reframing takes the 4k resolution and the powerful AI autofocus and moves the frame to maintain the framing of a subject, even while you’re moving. This is something that you can do in a post with precise keyframing, but for the creator, this is intended for, time is money. You don’t have to bother your friends to film for you anymore! Product showcase is a feature that is so simple, the camera performs a focus rack to an object when put in the middle of a frame, and goes back to the eye tracking autofocus when it’s down. This lets the creator show off things like products or objects in frame and the camera intuitively focus on it while it’s in frame. Anybody who has done a product review would know this is a very nice quality-of-life feature.
What things won’t change, and why we love it.
The Sony ZVE1 is still an e-mount, full-frame sensor at the time of this blog. That means there are 75 different lenses that you can use to get the look that you want and never miss a shot, giving you more creative options and less thinking about upgrading from your current Sony Camera.
Overall, Sony has made a very good point and is doing a very good job using already successful technology and adapting it to all creators.
