Fujifilm's First Dedicated Filmmaking Camera: The New GFX ETERNA 55

Fujifilm has officially entered the world of professional filmmaking with the groundbreaking release of the new GFX ETERNA 55 Filmmaking Camera! Built from the ground up for cinematographers, this camera brings Fujifilm's renowned technology and colour science to a large-format sensor, offering a new tool for creating stunning cinematic visuals. Let’s take a look at all the details that will have filmmakers buzzing.

First and foremost, the new GFX ETERNA 55 boasts an impressive 102 megapixels, 44 x 33mm, large-format sensor. This sensor isn’t just big, it’s one of the tallest available on the market for digital filmmaking, providing incredible versatility for both spherical and anamorphic lenses. Featuring five main formats: “GF”, “Premista”, “35mm”, “ANAMORPHIC (35mm)”, and “Super35”, filmmakers can achieve that wide-angle, cinematic feel or lean into more epic proportions when working with anamorphic glass or other lenses. Whether you're shooting landscapes, portraits, or expansive cinematic shots, this sensor gives you a creative canvas unlike anything we’ve seen before. The camera has also been optimized for its large format sensor, adopting a four-point Optical Low-Pass Filter to reduce the potential for optical anomalies.

Dynamic range is another standout. With F-Log2 and F-Log2 C, the GFX ETERNA 55 delivers over 14 stops of dynamic range, ensuring that even the most challenging lighting scenarios are handled with ease. This also takes full advantage of the large-format sensor, ensuring rich tonality and flexibility in post. The dual-base ISO system (ISO 800 and ISO 3200) adds another layer of control, making this camera equally at home in bright outdoor settings or dimly lit interiors.

For those chasing impeccable colour, Fujifilm's heritage shines through with its Film Simulations. The GFX ETERNA 55 is equipped with 20 Film Simulations, which let you craft gorgeous looks in-camera, perfect for quick turnarounds or when you want to nail your aesthetic right out of the gate. There are 10 Film Simulation conversion 3D-LUTs (compliant with ITU-R BT.709) for precise colour and tone adjustment of footage filmed in Log (F-Log2/F-Log2 C), alongside two new, exclusive LUTs, ETERNA and ETERNA BLEACH BYPASS, giving users the ability to download a total of 10 3D Film Simulation LUTs. The camera includes 16 different 3D LUTs,  including 3D Film Simulation LUTs, which can be stored in-camera, offering unmatched flexibility for shaping colour and tone.

On the practical side, Fujifilm has paid close attention to functionality and ease of use. he compact body, weighing just 2.0 kg (4.4 lbs), is designed with solo shooters and small crews in mind. The front of the camera and the included handle both feature a multi-function dial that controls the focus, iris, and zoom of GF lenses. When the dial is set to “ND,” it allows fine adjustment of the internal electronic variable ND filter density, making it simple to adapt to changing light conditions on the fly. Both sides of the camera feature a 3-inch side monitor to ensure that both operators and assistants can easily navigate the camera’s menus, while the 5-inch, 2000-nit LCD monitor handles outdoor visibility like a champ

Battery life and storage are equally impressive. The camera’s internal battery slot supports a high-capacity NP-W235 battery for up to 30 minutes of continuous shooting without external power. When replacing an external battery, power is supplied from the NP-W235, allowing hot-swap capabilities where you won’t lose precious time by restarting the camera. For media, it supports both CFexpress Type B and SD cards, providing plenty of flexibility for high-bitrate video recording.

When it comes to codecs and workflow, the GFX ETERNA 55 is built to handle the demands of modern production. It supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ, 422, 422 LT, and even proxy recording with ProRes 422 Proxy for streamlined editing. The addition of Frame.io Camera to Cloud functionality allows filmmakers to upload footage directly to a central platform, enabling faster collaboration across teams.
