Fujifilm Goes Long with the New XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR

Fujifilm has officially announced the new FUJINON XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR, a super-telephoto prime lens designed to deliver exceptional reach, high optical performance, and impressive mobility for Fujifilm X Series photographers. With its 400mm focal length and bright F4.5 maximum aperture, the XF400mm delivers a 609mm equivalent field of view in 35mm format, making it an ideal choice for wildlife, birds, sports, aviation, motorsports, and other far subjects. To see the reach themselves, TCSTV's Dave and Evelyn took a trip to the local wetlands to put the XF 400mm to the test!

Inside the new FUJINON XF 400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR is a sophisticated 21-element, 14-group optical design, including two Super ED elements and four ED elements. This construction minimizes chromatic aberration while maintaining excellent resolution and detail across the frame. The combination of a 400mm focal length, F4.5 aperture, and Fujifilm's APS-C sensor format makes the lens particularly well suited to capturing distant, fast-moving subjects. With the addition of Fujifilm's teleconverters, the lens can extend to 560mm, providing an impressive 853mm full-frame equivalent field of view with the XF 1.4X TC WR converter, or 800mm, equivalent to an incredible 1,219mm in 35mm format, with the XF2X TC WR. Meanwhile, weighing in at only 1,245g (2.74 lbs.), the XF 400mm is one of the more compact and lightweight options in its class. Fujifilm has also optimized the lens' optical design to position the centre of gravity closer to the camera body, helping improve balance and handling while reducing fatigue during extended handheld shooting sessions.

To allow photographers to confidently shoot handheld at extremely long focal lengths while maintaining sharp, stable images, the XF 400mm incorporates an optical image stabilization system that provides up to 5.5 stops of stabilization. This is particularly useful when working in challenging outdoor environments or when a tripod isn't practical.

The XF400mm is equipped with an internal focusing system driven by a high-speed linear motor, providing fast, quiet and highly accurate autofocus performance. The lens also includes several features designed specifically for demanding super-telephoto shooting. A Focus Preset function allows photographers to instantly return to a pre-registered focus position using the SET button, while the Focus Control Button provides quick access to functions selected through the Focus Select Switch.

Ready for challenging conditions, the XF 400mm is designed for outdoor use, featuring 20 weather-sealing points throughout the lens barrel for dust and weather resistance. It is rated for operation in temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F), making it well suited to the kinds of environments where wildlife and outdoor photographers often find themselves.
The front lens element is also treated with a fluorine coating that provides water-repellent and anti-smudge properties, helping keep the front element clean and ready for action.
