First Firmware Update for the Nikon ZR Cinema Camera

Nikon has just rolled out its first firmware update for the Nikon ZR cinema camera, and it’s packed with features and enhancements that are sure to make videographers’ lives easier. Firmware V1.10 introduces upgrades that improve multi-camera workflows, extend recording times, and enhance exposure monitoring, plus additional usability features. For filmmakers and content creators using the ZR, this update is a must-have!

The Nikon ZR firmware update V1.10 brings improved timecode synchronization, giving users more flexibility and reliability in multi-camera and audio setups. In addition to the existing Bluetooth option, the ZR now supports timecode input through a wired connection. This eliminates the need for Bluetooth pairing and simplifies syncing external devices like audio recorders and other cameras. Once connected, the timecode keeps running even if the external generator is disconnected (also known as “jam sync”), eliminating the need to re-synchronize and saving time and effort during production. On top of that, Nikon has added a new file-naming feature inspired by RED cameras. This system prevents duplicate file names and makes organizing footage across multiple cameras far more efficient. Videographers can also see file names directly in the live view, streamlining workflows on set

For creators tackling long-form projects, firmware V1.10 offers a massive boost in recording capabilities. The maximum recording time has jumped from 125 minutes to an impressive 360 minutes (6 hours), including formats like ProRes 422 HQ, H.265, and H.264 at various frame rates. This enhancement is perfect for lengthy shoots, whether it’s a documentary, concert, or interview. With this update, filmmakers can confidently tackle extended takes without worrying about stopping mid-scene to restart recording.

Exposure monitoring just got smarter with the introduction of a warning line for maximum brightness levels. When recording R3D NE videos in Log3G10, users can now see a line on the histogram or waveform monitor to help prevent overexposure and unintentional clipping. The warning line adjusts dynamically based on ISO sensitivity, giving videographers a better grasp of their exposure settings in real time.

Finally, Firmware V1.10 also brings a handful of quality-of-life updates. A new [Power-on lamp energy saver] option allows users to choose to keep the power-on lamp lit at all times when the camera is powered on, making it easy to check if the camera is powered on, even with the monitor closed, preventing accidental battery drain during transport. Additionally, Nikon has increased the number of LUTs that can be viewed while importing from a memory card using Custom Setting [3D LUT] > [Import CUBE file] from 10 to a maximum of 50. This gives users more creative flexibility when fine-tuning their look on location. Lastly, the update allows [Video file type] to be set to [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] even in AUTO shooting mode, making it easier to access high-quality settings.
