Celebrating 30 Years of the RICOH GR Series & Its Latest Achievements

Ricoh Imaging is celebrating a significant milestone this October with the 30th anniversary of the RICOH GR Series! Since the launch of the original RICOH GR1, the GR Series has built a reputation for delivering high-quality cameras tailored for enthusiasts and professionals alike. Adding to this momentous occasion, the RICOH GR IV has just been crownedBest APS-C Compact Camera" at the prestigious 2026 Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) Photo & Imaging Awards. This dual celebration highlights the GR series’ rich legacy and its ongoing dedication to innovation and quality in the photography world.

In 1996, the inaugural RICOH GR1 with its 28mm F2.8 GR lens quickly became a favourite among photographers who valued its commitment to portability and image quality. As digital technology took centre stage, the series evolved with the times. In 2005, the RICOH GR DIGITAL made its debut as the first digital model in the lineup, featuring a 1/1.8-inch CCD sensor and approximately 8.13 effective megapixels. Over the years, the GR series continued to push boundaries through technological advancements and changing trends, all while consistently staying true to its core values of high image quality, quick response, and portability. All of this culminated in the 2025 release of the RICOH GR IV, the latest model in the GR series and winner of Best APS-C Compact Camera at the TIPA Photo & Imaging Awards.

Every year, the TIPA Photo & Imaging Awards recognize the best photo and imaging products, with 40 categories that celebrate innovation, quality, and leadership in the Global Imaging Industry. The RICOH GR IV was the winner of Best APS-C Compact Camera for its array of advanced features, including 5-axis image stabilization, fast autofocus, and responsive handling, all designed to provide photographers with seamless shooting experiences. Its core strength lies in its high-performance APS-C sensor paired with the sharp GR lens, delivering incredible image quality with crisp detail, vibrant colours, and an impressive dynamic range. Plus, the magnesium alloy body ensures durability while maintaining a lightweight and pocketable form factor, making the RICOH GR IV an ideal companion for street, travel, and everyday photography.
